Athletics - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of the Year 4 Athletics series, students are tasked with mastering the skill of jumping for height. The lesson's objectives are to demonstrate various jumping techniques, achieve the highest possible jump, and leap over obstacles with confidence. Key vocabulary such as 'jumping', 'height', 'vertical jump', 'speed bounce', and 'scissor jump' is introduced. The equipment needed for the lesson includes flat markers, chalk, hurdles, cones, ribbons, and hoops. The warm-up consists of a dynamic activity where students jog around the space and respond to numbered commands that involve different jumping actions, such as touching the ground, skipping, and performing tuck jumps. The warm-up is designed to prepare the leg muscles for the physical activity ahead and to encourage the use of arms for gaining height, as well as to focus on proper take-off and landing techniques.
The main portion of the lesson, lasting 35 minutes, is divided into four jumping activities focusing on vertical jumping, speed bouncing, and scissor jumps. Students are split into groups and pairs to take turns at each station, with the aim of reaching as high as possible and marking their achievements. After spending time at each activity, students rotate to ensure they experience all types of jumps. Extensions are provided to challenge students further, such as varying the jump take-off or increasing the height of the hurdles. The lesson concludes with a competitive game called 'Catch the Ribbon' where students aim to grab a ribbon from a hoop held aloft by a peer, followed by a 'Leap Frog' cool-down activity where students practice safe jumping techniques. Throughout the lesson, students are encouraged to discuss what they've learned about jumping for height and the importance of warming up and using proper form to jump safely and effectively.
