Hockey - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of a Year 3 hockey module, the learning objective is to develop the ability to dribble under pressure. Students are expected to learn how to maintain control of the ball and stay aware of their surroundings. The success of this lesson is measured by the pupils' ability to dribble with control and lift their heads to observe others, while the key vocabulary focuses on terms such as 'dribble', 'control', 'awareness', and 'tackle'. The required equipment for the lesson includes a class set of hockey sticks, balls, and cones.
The lesson begins with a ten-minute 'Traffic Light' warm-up game, where pupils dribble around an area, responding to colour-coded commands from the teacher. This exercise aims to improve their dribbling skills and spatial awareness. The main thirty-minute activity involves a recap of the previous session's dribbling techniques, followed by a practical exercise where pupils dribble around cones. Pupils then work in pairs to give each other feedback on dribbling technique. The highlight of the lesson is the 'Island Dribble' game, where pupils manoeuvre the ball between safe zones or 'islands' while avoiding 'catchers' who try to steal the ball. The session ends with a cool-down period that includes 'Follow my leader' exercises, encouraging pupils to reflect on their learning and discuss strategies for effective dribbling under pressure.
