Games 5 - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
The Games 5 unit for Year 1 pupils is designed to enhance motor skills and core muscle strength through a series of high-intensity activities. This unit builds on prior knowledge of running, jumping, and core exercises such as sit-ups and press-ups. The aim is to develop the children's ability to work energetically during fitness circuits and to understand the physical signs of exertion. Each lesson is structured to last one hour, including time for changing and setting up equipment, and can be adjusted for shorter sessions. Teachers are encouraged to use the provided images and score sheet to guide the exercises and to record progress in lesson 6.
The Medium Term Plan outlines six lessons, each with specific learning objectives and success criteria. Lesson 1 focuses on completing a fitness circuit with high intensity, while Lesson 2 aims for short bursts of high-intensity work, including races that combine fitness activities. Lesson 3 targets leg muscle strength through exercises that enhance coordination, jumping ability, and shuttle running. In Lesson 4, pupils work on core muscle strengthening activities, learning new exercises and exercise terminology. Lesson 5 is about improving motor skills through aerobic games, sprinting, and reacting to moving objects. The final lesson, Lesson 6, encourages pupils to perform to their maximum effort, repeat the fitness skills learned, and accurately record their results. The unit is flexible, suitable for both indoor and outdoor settings, and promotes progression by setting small targets during partner activities.
