Skill Based Challenges - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
The fifth lesson in the Reception class's Skill Based Challenges, part of the Striver Lesson Plans for athletics, aims to develop pupils' ability to move with precision, coordination, and creativity. The learning objectives are set to enable pupils to master the art of ball bouncing, both with one hand and two, judge the power necessary for a bounce, and accurately bounce towards targets. To achieve these objectives, key vocabulary such as 'bouncing', 'catching', 'control', 'challenges', and 'personal best' is introduced, ensuring that pupils understand the terminology associated with the activities. The lesson requires various equipment, including cones, different types of balls, flat markers, a post, and a beanbag to facilitate a range of engaging exercises.
The session is structured into three parts, starting with a warm-up where pupils move around, responding to calls of different areas of a basketball court and practicing their agility. The main portion of the lesson comprises four bouncing challenges that encourage individual and group participation, focusing on techniques like bouncing on the spot, against a wall, under a partner's legs, and as high as possible towards a post. Each activity is designed to improve specific skills such as catching, bouncing with control, and coordination. The lesson concludes with a cool-down game called 'Hide The Beanbag', which involves pupils guessing who has secretly been given a beanbag while they all move around the area. This final activity combines observation skills with physical movement, wrapping up the lesson with a fun and interactive exercise.
