Skill Based Challenges - Lesson 3
Physical Education Resource Description
In the third lesson of the Skill Based Challenges series for Reception pupils, the focus is on developing throwing skills with an emphasis on achieving personal bests. The lesson's objectives are designed to encourage children to throw a ball with accuracy, judge the height and weight of their throws, and aim effectively at targets. Key vocabulary such as 'throwing', 'underarm', 'aiming', 'challenges', and 'personal best' are introduced to enhance the learning experience. The equipment needed for this lesson includes tall cones, beanbags, tennis balls, large balls, and hoops, which are essential for the planned activities.
The lesson is structured into three main sections: a warm-up, the main activity, and a cool-down. During the warm-up, children participate in a dynamic game called 'Cats and Dogs', which involves partnering and movement exercises to prepare them for the session ahead. The main activity consists of three throwing challenges: 'Hoop Land', 'Knock Down', and 'Through The Hoop', each focusing on different aspects of throwing techniques such as underarm and overarm throws. These activities encourage teamwork, turn-taking, and concentration. To conclude, a cool-down period is spent in a circle with the teacher leading various stretching and movement exercises. Throughout the lesson, children are encouraged to reflect on their performance, discuss their favourite challenges, and consider how they can practice and improve their throwing skills at home.
