Skill Based Challenges - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Striver Lesson Plans for Reception, children are introduced to a series of rolling challenges aimed at developing their ability to achieve personal bests. The lesson's objectives focus on accuracy in rolling a ball, judging the weight and speed necessary for a successful roll, and working collaboratively to reach targets and scores. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes terms like 'rolling', 'underarm', 'aiming', 'challenges', and 'personal best'. To facilitate the activities, a variety of equipment is required, including cones, large balls, tall cones, hoops, and tennis balls.
The session begins with a warm-up game called 'Wolves', where three pupils act as hunters with balls, and the rest are wolves moving on hands and feet. A wolf becomes 'frozen' when tagged and can be unfrozen by a peer. This is followed by the main activities, which include 'Mind The Gap', where children aim to roll a ball through gaps between cones; 'Under The Bridge', where they roll a ball under a human bridge; and 'In The Hoop', where pairs roll balls into hoops from varying distances. These activities encourage children to focus on their rolling technique, aiming, and coordination. The lesson concludes with a 'Cool Down' where the children engage in beach-themed actions, allowing them to relax and reflect on the challenges they faced during the lesson, discussing which tasks they found easy or difficult and whether they persevered or gave up when faced with challenges.
