Catching and Throwing - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
The Reception class embarks on their fifth lesson in catching and throwing, focusing on the manipulation of circular equipment. The learning objectives are clear: pupils should be able to roll a hoop with a push and release technique, throw a quoit so it lands flat, and throw and catch a quoit from a height. These goals are supported by key vocabulary such as rolling, push, release, and throwing, which are integral to the activities planned. The lesson begins with a warm-up that involves various movements around and with a hoop, designed to get the children moving and listening to instructions. The warm-up includes running, walking, jumping, and hopping around the hoop, as well as moving it with their hands and feet, preparing them for the main activities to come.
During the main part of the lesson, which spans 30 minutes, the children work in pairs, taking turns to throw quoits into a hoop and aiming to score points. Key teaching points focus on the technique of holding and releasing the quoit. The activity progresses to include extensions and variations, such as increasing the distance to the hoop or using a smaller hoop to increase difficulty. The session then moves on to a throwing and catching exercise where pupils throw their quoit into the air and catch it, culminating in an attempt to land it in a hoop upon a whistle blow. The lesson concludes with a cool-down activity called 'Trains', where pupils work in pairs, travelling to different hoops and following commands, which helps to reinforce the skills practised during the lesson and allows for a gentle wind-down after the main activities.
