Catching and Throwing - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
The second lesson in the Reception Catching & Throwing series focuses on developing pupils' abilities to throw with accuracy using both underarm and overarm techniques, specifically with beanbags. The lesson's objectives are for pupils to learn to move while executing underarm throws, to throw a beanbag with one hand and catch it with two, and to perform overarm throws with power. To aid in these activities, the lesson requires equipment such as cones, hoops, beanbags, and tall cones. The warm-up involves a speed-increasing exercise where pupils walk, jog, and sprint between marked lines, focusing on moving in a straight line and swinging their arms. The warm-up is adaptable for indoor spaces and can be extended or varied to increase difficulty or create a race scenario.
The main part of the lesson lasts for 30 minutes and includes engaging activities such as 'Coloured Corners', where pupils move around with a beanbag and aim to throw it underarm into hoops of called-out colours. This activity evolves to incorporate overarm throws with pupils standing further from the hoops. Another activity, 'Food Plate', challenges pupils to throw their beanbag above their head and catch it with a cone, encouraging the use of both hands and coordination. The lesson concludes with a 'Penguin Dance' cooldown, where pupils walk around with a beanbag between their knees, focusing on control and balance. Each activity is designed to build on the pupils' throwing and catching skills, with variations and extensions to cater to different skill levels and to keep the lesson dynamic and inclusive.
