Athletics - Unit Overview
Physical Education Resource Description
In the Reception year athletics unit, pupils are set to develop foundational skills in jumping and throwing, along with managing hurdles. The unit is structured to enhance pupils' abilities in sprinting swiftly over short distances, using proper techniques for jumping and throwing, and achieving accuracy in their throws. The unit is designed to build on previous key skills such as running, which encompasses sprinting, hurdles, and relay, as well as various throwing techniques (overarm and underarm) and jumping styles (two-footed, high jump).
Teachers are provided with tips to ensure successful delivery of the unit, including adapting the timings for lessons shorter than one hour and recognising the importance of repetition for young pupils mastering basic skills. Additionally, there's guidance on how to challenge advanced pupils with individual targets and advice on keeping activities simple with the option to increase complexity over time. The medium-term plan outlines specific learning objectives and success criteria for each lesson, ranging from sprinting over a 30m distance to throwing with accuracy towards targets. This structured approach aims to progressively develop the athletic skills of Reception pupils through engaging and appropriately challenging activities.
