Agility, Space and Movement - Lesson 5
Physical Education Resource Description
Lesson 5 in the Reception class is all about exploring different jumping movement skills as part of the Athletics module in the Striver Lesson Plans. The learning objectives are clear: pupils should be able to jump and land using two feet, jump both forwards and backwards, and jump while moving at speed. Key vocabulary such as 'jumping', 'bending knees', 'landing', 'hopping', 'direction', 'balance', and 'control' are introduced to help develop the children's understanding and communication of the movements. The equipment needed for the lesson includes cones, hoops, and flat markers or spots, ensuring a variety of activities to engage the pupils.
The lesson structure is divided into three main parts: a warm-up, the main activity, and a cool down. During the warm-up, children find their own space and move around freely until the teacher calls out a body part, which they then have to tap five times, promoting coordination and awareness. The main activity consists of a series of jumping exercises such as 'Hoop Jump', where children practice two-footed jumps in and out of a hoop, and 'Marker Jump', where they navigate flat markers by jumping over them. They also engage in 'Hoop Path' and 'Hoop Jump Backwards', which incorporate jumping into hoops and moving backwards. The session ends with a cool down involving 'Coloured Jumps', where children bunny hop to the nearest cone upon command. Throughout the lesson, key teaching points are emphasized, such as the importance of bending knees and swinging arms for momentum, and pupils are encouraged to discuss what they've learned and how they can apply it to jumping activities outside of school.
