Agility, Space and Movement - Lesson 4
Physical Education Resource Description
In the fourth lesson of the Striver Lesson Plans for Reception students focusing on Agility, Space, and Movement, the young learners are introduced to various ways of moving and understanding spatial awareness. The learning objectives are clear: students should be able to move in different directions, stop and touch the floor quickly, and recognise how their bodies feel during exercise. The lesson is designed to be fun and engaging, utilising key vocabulary such as movements, directions, space, and balance, to name a few. The warm-up begins with the 'Bean Game', where children perform different bean-themed actions, including jumping, jogging, and stretching. This not only warms them up but also teaches them about using space and the importance of soft landings and moving with awareness of others.
The main part of the lesson involves a 'Touch the Floor' activity, where children are divided into groups and take turns jogging between cones, responding to the teacher's command to touch the floor. This exercise helps them practice stopping, bending their knees, and running in a straight line. The lesson progresses with a 'Movement Relay', where pupils use various movements like hopping and moving sideways or backwards, reinforcing their understanding of different ways to travel. The lesson concludes with a 'Cool Down' where the children jump over cones, first with both feet and then hopping on one leg, allowing them to practice balance and coordination. Throughout the lesson, the teacher uses pupil talk to encourage reflection on the activities, ensuring the children are aware of the movements they are performing and the changes in their bodies as a result of the exercise.
