Agility, Space and Movement - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
The second lesson in the Striver Lesson Plans for Reception focuses on Agility, Space, and Movement (A, S & M) with an emphasis on developing pupils' ability to move fluently, change direction and speed. The lesson's success criteria set the stage for the pupils to gain confidence in moving into spaces, responding promptly to different commands, and swiftly changing direction. Key vocabulary such as 'movement', 'space', 'listening', 'instructions', 'change direction', and 'travelling' are introduced. The lesson begins with a warm-up called 'Traffic Lights', where pupils follow commands associated with coloured cones: red for stopping with hands up, yellow for walking or tip-toeing, and green for moving at a quicker pace. The warm-up encourages pupils to be aware of their surroundings and to keep scanning the room for open spaces to move into.
The main activity continues with the 'Traffic Lights' theme, now incorporating blue cones that signal pupils to change direction when approached. Pupils navigate an area filled with cones, avoiding contact with them while responding to the traffic light commands and performing different actions, such as 'nutmegging' the cones. Another activity, 'Rabbit Holes', involves pupils moving around cones and quickly returning to their designated cone on command. Teachers can extend these activities by increasing the speed of commands or introducing new movements, and variations can be made to keep the activities engaging. The lesson concludes with a 'Freeze Game' cool down, where pupils practice freezing on the spot when the teacher turns around, reinforcing the day's focus on movement and space awareness. Pupil talk prompts encourage reflection on the activities, their favourite games, and the importance of moving into space.
