Agility, Space and Movement - Lesson 1
Physical Education Resource Description
The Striver lesson plans for Reception children in the 'Agility, Space and Movement' series begin with a lesson aimed at developing young pupils' awareness of themselves and others. The objectives of the first lesson are to enhance their listening skills, safely navigate space, and move with confidence and imagination. To achieve these goals, the lesson incorporates simple instructions that the children must listen to and follow. The success criteria set clear expectations: pupils should be able to follow these instructions, move safely within the allocated space, and express themselves confidently and creatively through movement. Key vocabulary terms such as 'space', 'awareness', 'listening', and 'balance' are introduced to help pupils articulate their experiences and understand the concepts being taught.
During the lesson, a variety of engaging activities are employed to facilitate learning. The warm-up involves 'Wiggly-woo', where pupils find their own cone, sit next to it, and perform wiggle actions to different parts of their body, returning to their cone upon hearing the cue 'cone'. The main activities include 'Train Stations' and 'Islands', which involve moving through cone-formed train stations and finding hoops to stand in, respectively. These exercises encourage pupils to be aware of their surroundings, move in pairs or groups, and follow the teacher's commands. The lesson concludes with a 'Statues' cool-down, where children move around and freeze like statues on the teacher's signal. Throughout the lesson, the importance of spatial awareness and balance is emphasized, and pupils are encouraged to share their experiences and reflections on the activities.
