Agility, Space and Movement - Lesson 2
Physical Education Resource Description
In the second lesson of a series focused on agility, space, and movement for nursery-aged children, the aim is to explore various high movement travel methods. The learning objectives set out clear goals for the pupils: to discover different ways to move around the room, to do so safely, to balance on the spot, and to listen and follow instructions. Key vocabulary such as 'balance', 'freeze', 'walk', 'jump', 'hop', 'skip', and 'run' is introduced to support the lesson's activities. Essential equipment includes a tambourine and coloured cones, which are used to facilitate the exercises.
The lesson starts with a five-minute warm-up called 'Frozen statues', where children move around the hall and freeze into a balance position when they hear the tambourine. The main 15-minute activity involves children finding new spaces in the hall at the sound of a drum and participating in the 'Sleeping Bunnies' game, which incorporates walking and jumping while maintaining quietness, as bunnies do. To further challenge the children, variations of the nursery rhyme are introduced, and the speed of the song and actions can be adjusted. The lesson concludes with a cool-down activity called 'Sleeping lions', where pupils lie on their backs, close their eyes, and stay still, with those who move being asked to sit out. Throughout the lesson, pupil talk is encouraged to reflect on their enjoyment and physical sensations, such as feeling out of breath.
