Basic layup line - Basketball
Physical Education Resource Description
The basic layup line is a fundamental basketball drill designed to practice layups, one of the most basic scoring shots in the game. To set up the drill, you need two lines of 3 to 4 players each, positioned on opposite sides of the basket. The ball starts with the first player in the right-hand line, who then drives towards the basket to attempt a layup. After making the layup, this player joins the back of the line on the opposite side. Meanwhile, the first player in line B moves in to rebound the ball and quickly passes it to the next player waiting in line A, before joining the back of their own line. This drill can be run continuously to keep players moving and engaged.
To add variety and challenge to the drill, coaches can introduce differentiation techniques. For instance, after passing the ball, players can apply pressure to the new attacker driving to the basket, simulating in-game defense scenarios. Another variation involves the rebounding player following their catch with a 'put back', which is essentially taking an immediate shot from a close range after grabbing the rebound. These variations not only improve layup skills but also enhance players' abilities to handle pressure and to score from rebounds during actual games.
