Haka Sequence Card - Dance
Physical Education Resource Description
The Haka, a traditional Maori dance known for its powerful movements and rhythmic chanting, is broken down into a sequence of actions in this dance card. Participants begin by adopting a wide stance as their starting position. The dance sequence commences with a combination of slapping the thighs six times, followed by one slap on the chest, and a single jump upwards. This is then followed by a shorter sequence of slapping the thighs twice, another chest slap, and another jump.
The dance continues with a dynamic movement where the dancer locks both elbows into the waist, extends the left arm outwards and still, while the right hand shakes vigorously in front of the body for a total of eight counts. The chant "AAH ROOP AAH" accompanies the next set of movements where both arms are raised to shoulder level, forming right angles. The dancer then alternates tapping their elbows with the opposite hand, two times on the right elbow with the left hand, two times on the left elbow with the right hand, and then one final tap on each elbow. The entire sequence consists of 29 counts, embodying the intensity and spirit of the Haka dance.
