Medium Term Plan - Striking and Fielding - Year 5
Physical Education Resource Description
The medium-term plan for Year 5 students in Key Stage 2 focuses on the development of striking and fielding skills over a course of six lessons. The intent of these lessons is to enhance the students' abilities in sending, receiving, batting, and bowling through a variety of activities, while also introducing them to small-sided and simplified competitive games. These games aim to improve the consistency and range of techniques used under pressure. Additionally, the plan emphasises the importance of understanding the effects of exercise and fostering teamwork and cooperation skills. Students will gain knowledge in initiating techniques in different contexts, basic gameplay strategies for scoring points, applying game rules, and the benefits of working cooperatively.
The skills curriculum includes throwing, catching, anticipation, striking/batting, and feeding/bowling. Learning is sequenced to build upon the ability to send and receive a ball accurately towards a target, use these skills in a competitive setting, work in teams, and push physical capacity. The curriculum covers key concepts such as outwitting opponents, developing physical and mental capacity, accurately replicating skills, decision-making, problem-solving, personal development, and evaluating and improving performance. The impact of the lessons ranges from beginning to exceeding levels, with students gradually improving their skills in bowling, throwing, catching, batting, understanding game tactics, and taking on leadership roles within a team. This PE scheme of work, which includes striking and fielding games like Kwik Cricket and Rounders, also incorporates cross-curricular links to literacy and numeracy through key vocabulary and scoring systems.
