Instrumental Activity Book - Double Double This This
Music Resource Description
The "Double Double This This" is an engaging clapping game designed to teach children about rhythm and coordination through a series of fun and interactive activities. In the game, participants perform different clapping actions in time with the words. For instance, "DOUBLE DOUBLE" requires clapping one's own hands together, while "THIS THIS" and "THAT THAT" involve clapping the hands of a partner and using the back of the hands, respectively. Despite "DOUBLE" being a two-syllable word, it is accompanied by a single clap. An extension activity encourages creativity, allowing children to substitute 'THIS' and 'THAT' with new words like 'PLAY' and 'TIME', while maintaining the same clapping pattern.
The activity book also includes various exercises that expand on the basic clapping game. These include chanting in two groups, with one group focusing on the word "double" and the other on "this" and "that". Another variant uses claves, where one group plays on "double" and the other on "this" and "that", all while internalising the words. Singing in canon with claves, using tuned instruments to provide a melodic aspect, and practicing different rhythms with one hand while keeping the pulse with the other are further activities that enrich the learning experience. These exercises help children develop a strong sense of rhythm and enhance their musical skills through playful collaboration.
