Instrumental - Year 6 Activity Sheet 1
Music Resource Description
Year 6 students are invited to explore rhythm and collaborative music-making with "Activity Sheet 1" from their instrumental lesson. The sheet presents a sequence of numbers from 1 to 8, repeated over several lines, which serves as a pattern for a group activity called "Changing Patterns". The aim of this exercise is to develop the students' ability to maintain a steady beat while selectively emphasising certain beats within the pattern. This foundational skill is essential for musical timing and ensemble playing.
The activity begins with students dividing into two groups. One group is assigned to vocalise the non-underlined numbers while the other group focuses on the underlined numbers, with both groups counting out loud together. This initial stage utilises the provided prop sheet to help students visualise the pattern. As confidence grows, students are encouraged to progress to playing from memory, internalising the pattern and counting in their heads. For those ready for an additional challenge, an extension task prompts them to think the non-underlined numbers silently, only vocalising or playing the underlined numbers. The key to success in this extension is maintaining a consistent pulse throughout the exercise. This activity is designed to complement "Active Music Year 6 Lesson 1", providing a practical and engaging way to enhance students' musical understanding and performance skills.
