Instrumental - Year 5 Activity Sheet 3
Music Resource Description
In Year 5 Activity Sheet 3, students are guided through a series of musical exercises designed to enhance their understanding and performance of rhythm and pulse using tuned instruments. The activities must be completed sequentially, ensuring mastery at each stage before progressing. The first task involves singing while playing the pulse, starting on the note G, which lays the foundation for the rhythmic work to follow. Subsequently, students are asked to sing and play the rhythm on their instruments, further embedding their sense of timing and beat.
As the students advance through the sheet, they are encouraged to think about the rhythm internally and then play it on their tuned instruments, an exercise that promotes cognitive musical understanding. The complexity increases as they are asked to divide into groups, with half playing the pulse and the other half playing the rhythm simultaneously. This is followed by practicing a tuned ostinato pattern, which consists of a repetitive sequence of notes (notated as G, G, E, E, C, C) that can also be adapted rhythmically to untuned instruments. Students then split their focus, with half singing and the other half playing the tuned ostinato. Eventually, all students sing while playing the ostinato, combining vocal and instrumental skills. For those ready for an additional challenge, an extension activity invites them to attempt playing the melody. These activities are designed to complement 'Active Music Year 5 Lesson 4' as part of a comprehensive music education programme.
