Instrumental - Year 5 Lesson 2
Music Resource Description
In the second lesson of the Year 5 Instrumental Compositions & Activities series, students are encouraged to develop their musical skills through a variety of engaging tasks. The learning objectives are clear: to play key words on un-tuned instruments with rhythmic accuracy, to internalise the rhythm of a song, to perform in groups in two parts, and to appraise their own and others' performances. The key vocabulary for this lesson includes pulse, rhythm, and internalise, which are fundamental concepts in music education. Each child is provided with claves or a similar tapping instrument, and an activity sheet to guide their learning journey.
The lesson is structured around a series of main activities that progressively build the children's confidence and ability in playing and understanding music. Starting with body percussion to explore complex patterns, the class then moves on to using their instruments. The song 'I Let Her Go Go' is taught and practised, with various exercises designed to focus on the word 'GO' and its rhythmic placement within the song. Group work is an essential part of the lesson, where children work in mixed ability teams to practise and perform the tasks, with the more confident members leading the group. The lesson aims to differentiate by outcome, ensuring that each group can only progress to the next activity once they have mastered the current one. The session concludes with a plenary discussion about the ease or difficulty of internalising rhythms and using instruments, and a final performance of 'Goodbye Everyone' with instruments in unison, reinforcing the concepts of pulse and rhythm.
