Instrumental - Year 4 Lesson 6
Music Resource Description
In Year 4's sixth instrumental lesson, students are encouraged to explore the creative process of composing rhythm patterns in groups. The learning objectives are centred around composing, notating, practicing, and performing their own rhythm compositions using both tuned and un-tuned instruments. The lesson aims to cultivate an understanding of musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, layers, and texture. Each child is provided with tapping instruments such as claves, and the class is equipped with a selection of tuned instruments and 4-beat rhythm flashcards to aid their learning.
The main activities begin with a fun engagement using instruments to play along with a track, encouraging students to lead with their own instrumental ideas. They then revisit a 5-step process involving rhythm flashcards to reinforce rhythm names, clapping, and instrument playing. The class collaborates to compose 4-beat rhythm patterns, which they then use to create layered rhythm compositions in groups. Differentiation is considered, with tasks tailored to varying abilities, including an extension activity for more able students and simplified tasks for those who need it. Each group performs their composition, followed by an appraisal to reflect on their timing, pulse, and rhythm accuracy. The plenary involves a discussion about the challenges of playing in an ensemble and concludes with a unison performance of 'GOODBYE EVERYONE'. The lesson is designed to align with the National Curriculum's objectives for composing, performing, and understanding musical notation in an ensemble context.
