Instrumental - Year 4 Lesson 2
Music Resource Description
In Year 4's second instrumental lesson, pupils are set to refine their rhythmic skills through a series of engaging activities. The learning objectives are centred around internalising and accurately playing rhythms on un-tuned percussion instruments, such as claves. The children will also practice performing in groups, using both their voices and instruments to create music in two parts. Additionally, they will learn to appraise their own and others' performances, developing critical listening and evaluation skills.
The main activities of the lesson begin with a fun 'FOLLOW THE PATTERN OF THE DRUM' activity, where children clap and then use their instruments to mimic rhythmic patterns. This is followed by the singing game 'ON CORRIANDA', which involves passing a tap in time to the music around a circle. After mastering the song's rhythm by tapping claves while singing at a slow tempo, the class is divided into two groups to perform the song in parts. This is done first with singing, then with 'THINKING VOICES', where they mentally rehearse the words. The lesson culminates in group performances, where children either chant or use thinking voices while playing their instruments. The plenary involves a discussion about playing 'by ear' and the use of thinking words to aid timing, followed by a unison rendition of 'GOODBYE EVERYONE' with instrumental accompaniment. Teachers are encouraged to ensure that the song 'On corrianda' is well-practiced before attempting the instrumental activities, with additional resources available in 'Notations' and on the accompanying DVD.
