Instrumental - Year 3 Activity Sheet 4
Music Resource Description
In Year 3 Activity Sheet 4, students are encouraged to explore rhythm through the organisation of 4-beat patterns into a sequence. This activity is designed to develop their understanding of rhythm and their ability to perform it in various ways. Initially, students are asked to choose a sequence of 4-beat patterns from the examples provided. Once selected, they should progress through a series of activities, ensuring they are confident with each step before moving on to the next.
The first activity involves saying the rhythm names aloud, which helps students to internalise the rhythmic pattern. Next, they are to say and clap the rhythm simultaneously, combining vocalisation with physical movement. The third step challenges students to think the rhythm in their minds while clapping, reinforcing their internal sense of timing. The fourth activity sees students saying the rhythm out loud while playing on instruments, integrating their vocal and instrumental skills. Finally, they must think and play the instruments, which requires a deeper level of rhythmic understanding as they perform without vocal cues. An extension activity is also included, where the class is divided into two groups to play the chosen sequence as a round, adding an element of complexity and teamwork to the exercise.
