Instrumental - Year 3 Activity Sheet 2
Music Resource Description
Year 3 students are encouraged to engage with a series of musical activities outlined on Activity Sheet 2, which is designed to progressively build their skills in playing and understanding music. The activities are structured to be completed in sequence, with each step intended to be mastered before moving on to the next. The first task involves singing the song "Engine Engine Number Nine" while playing the pulse on tuned instruments, starting with the note G, which lays the foundation for rhythm and timing.
As students progress, they move on to singing and playing the rhythm on tuned instruments, which helps them to differentiate between the steady pulse and the varying rhythm of the song. The third activity requires them to think and play the rhythm, fostering a deeper internalisation of the musical pattern. This is followed by an exercise where half of the group plays the pulse and the other half plays the rhythm simultaneously, promoting coordination and ensemble playing. The fifth task focuses on practicing a tuned ostinato pattern, which can also be adapted to un-tuned instruments for rhythmic practice. Students then combine singing with playing the ostinato, culminating in an activity where the entire group sings while playing the pattern. For those ready for an additional challenge, the extension activity invites students to attempt playing the melody of the song. These exercises are part of the Active Music Year 3 Lesson 4 curriculum and are designed to enhance the musical abilities of Year 3 students.
