Max Maths, Year 5, Work Book, Review of measuring length, mass and volume
Maths Resource Description
In "Max Maths, Year 5, Work Book", students are given a practical exercise to review the measurement of length, mass, and volume. Practice 4 presents a task where students must match various objects with the most suitable unit of measurement. The units provided for selection include millimetres (mm), centimetres (cm), metres (m) for length; grams (g), kilograms (kg) for mass; and millilitres (ml), litres (l) for volume or capacity. Each question, labelled from (a) to (f), requires students to think critically about the scale and size of the objects in question to determine whether they are best measured in units appropriate for small, precise measurements or larger, bulkier quantities.
The exercise is designed to reinforce the students' understanding of which units are most appropriate for different measurements. For instance, they must decide whether the length of an item is best quantified in millimetres, centimetres, or metres, depending on its size. Similarly, they need to assess whether the capacity of a container is more suitably expressed in millilitres or litres, and whether the mass of an object should be measured in grams or kilograms. This activity not only helps to consolidate their knowledge of metric units but also enhances their ability to estimate and choose the most relevant unit for various everyday measurements.
