Max Maths, Year 5, Learn together, Review of measuring volume
Maths Resource Description
In the Year 5 Max Maths curriculum, students revisit the important topic of measuring mass. To facilitate their understanding, they are reminded to recall the two main units of measurement for mass: grams (g) and kilograms (kg). These units are essential for expressing the weight of various objects accurately. Students then put their knowledge into practice by determining the most appropriate unit of measurement for a range of items. For instance, they are asked to choose between grams and kilograms when measuring the mass of a spoonful of sugar, a sack of rice, a bicycle, and a hand-sized stone.
The lesson continues with a review of measuring volume, another fundamental aspect of mathematics. Students are prompted to remember the units used to record volume, which are millilitres (ml) and litres (l). With these units in mind, they engage in practical exercises to select the correct unit of measurement for different volumes. These exercises include determining whether to use millilitres or litres for a glass of water, a full bucket, the amount of water used by a shower in 10 minutes, and the concentrate required to make one litre of cordial. The workbook activities related to these concepts can be found on page 189, providing students with further practice and reinforcement of their measuring skills.
