Max Maths, Year 5, Learn together, Review of finding pairs of 1-place decimals with a total of 1
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 5 curriculum, students are encouraged to review and strengthen their understanding of decimal number pairs that add up to 1. This concept is revisited to ensure that learners are comfortable with identifying pairs of one-place decimals that, when combined, equal one whole. To make this easier, the lesson draws a parallel between familiar number bonds to 10 and their decimal counterparts. For instance, if students know that 4 plus 6 equals 10, they can easily deduce that 0.4 plus 0.6 equals 1. Similarly, number bonds such as 3 plus 7, 5 plus 5, and 9 plus 1 are translated into decimal pairs of 0.3 plus 0.7, 0.5 plus 0.5, and 0.9 plus 0.1, respectively, all summing up to 1.
With this foundational understanding in place, students are then tasked to apply their knowledge in a practical exercise. They are presented with a list of decimal numbers and asked to match them into pairs that total 1. This activity includes various combinations, such as 0.2 with 0.8, 0.5 with 0.5, and 0.1 with 0.9, among others. This exercise not only reinforces their grasp of decimal number bonds but also sharpens their addition skills with decimals. By engaging in this activity, learners solidify their ability to work with one-place decimals and develop greater confidence in their mathematical proficiency.
