Max Maths, Year 5, Practice, Word problems
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 5 mathematics lesson, students tackle the concept of calculating time durations through word problems. One of the problems involves a character named Toby who falls asleep and wakes up twice, with the aim being to determine the total amount of time that has passed between his awakenings. To assist with this, students are encouraged to draw a timeline that includes key times such as 23:00, 00:00 (midnight), 01:00, 02:00, and 03:00. By adding the durations between these times, they can calculate the total time Toby slept before waking up the second time.
The practice section, titled 'Let's Practise', presents students with additional real-life scenarios to apply their time calculation skills. For instance, Jade, who surfs the internet for 35 minutes a day, prompts students to work out her total internet usage over a week and then over a four-week period. Another problem follows Toby's journey to the market, where students must calculate the duration of his trip based on his departure time at 07:00 and his return at 13:25. These exercises not only reinforce the students' understanding of time calculations but also provide a practical application for their skills. For further practice, students are directed to workbook pages 131 to 133.
