Max Maths, Year 4, Try it, Reading and making bar graphs
Maths Resource Description
In this activity designed for Year 4 students, they are presented with a vertical bar graph that represents the favourite sports of learners in a class. The sports listed are football, badminton, swimming, running, and basketball, with the number of learners who favour each sport displayed on the vertical axis. Students are tasked with interpreting the graph to answer several questions about the sports' popularity.
The questions require students to identify which sport is the most and least popular based on the height of the bars. They must also determine which sport is favoured by 8 learners by finding the corresponding bar on the graph. Additionally, students are asked to calculate the difference in popularity between running and swimming and to sum up the total number of learners to find the class size. Finally, they need to ascertain which sport is the second favourite by comparing the heights of the bars. This exercise helps students develop their skills in reading and interpreting data from bar graphs, which is an essential aspect of mathematical literacy.
