Max Maths, Year 3, Learn together, Finding and describing position (2)
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 3 curriculum, students learn to find and describe the positions of objects using a coordinate system of labelled columns and rows, much like a grid on a map or a chessboard. This system helps students to develop their spatial awareness and understand how to navigate and articulate positions in a two-dimensional space. For example, they might be presented with a grid where the columns are labelled A to F and the rows are numbered 1 to 5. Each cell within the grid represents a unique position, which can be described using a combination of a letter and a number.
Using this coordinate system, students can easily identify the location of various objects. For instance, if there is a horse, it might be positioned in cell A5, which means it is in the column labelled 'A' and row '5'. Similarly, a fish could be in cell F2, a rabbit in D4, and a cat in B3. This method of describing positions is not only practical for classroom activities but also forms a fundamental skill that students can apply in real-life scenarios where identifying and communicating location is essential.
