Max Maths, Year 3, Learn together, Review of units of volume (1)
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 3 curriculum, students revisit the concept of measuring volume, focusing on understanding and reading scales on measuring cylinders. This review is crucial for students to accurately determine the volume of liquids, a fundamental skill in both science and everyday life. The lesson begins by examining different measuring cylinders, each marked with volume scales, and students are tasked with identifying the volume of liquid contained within them.
The activity presents four examples, each with a different amount of liquid in the cylinder. In the first instance (a), the cylinder shows 20 millilitres (ml) of liquid, while in the second (b), a larger volume of 500 millilitres is depicted. Students then observe a third measuring cylinder (c) with 400 millilitres of liquid, and finally, a fourth (d) with a smaller volume of just 5 millilitres. Through these exercises, students practice reading the scales marked in increments, such as 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 millilitres, thereby enhancing their understanding of volume measurement and reinforcing their numerical skills.
