Max Maths, Year 3, Try it, Adding 2-digit numbers mentally
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Try it' section of the Max Maths Year 3 material, students are encouraged to mentally add two-digit numbers by first regrouping them into tens and ones. This method simplifies the addition process and helps students to understand the value of each digit in a number. For example, when adding 12 and 53, students would break down the numbers into tens and ones: 10 + 2 and 50 + 3. They would then add the tens together and the ones together before combining both sums to get the final answer. This exercise reinforces the concept of place value and the ease of adding numbers in parts.
The 'Let’s Practise' section provides a series of two-digit addition problems for students to solve mentally, without the need for regrouping. This section is designed to build fluency in mental arithmetic by encouraging students to add numbers such as 43 + 24 and 61 + 85 directly. It challenges students to use their understanding of number relationships and addition strategies to find the sums quickly and accurately. After completing these exercises, students are directed to workbook pages 42 to 45 for further practice and consolidation of the skills they've been developing.
