In a Year 2 classroom, students are learning about directions through a practical exercise that involves navigating a plan of their classroom. The seating arrangement is complemented by multiple chairs placed around the tables. The lesson includes exercises where students give each other instructions to move from one point in the classroom to another. For instance, Padma instructs Samir to walk from the door to the teacher's desk by moving forward 14 squares, making a quarter turn anticlockwise, walking forward another 22 squares, then taking a quarter turn clockwise, and finally moving forward one more square to reach the destination. In another example, Jade guides Han from the computer to the student table closest to the door with a series of steps involving a half turn, walking forward 21 squares, two quarter turns clockwise, and a forward movement of 4 squares. Through these activities, children learn to visualise and execute a set of directions, enhancing their understanding of movement and positioning within a given space.
