In the Max Maths Year 1 curriculum, young learners are introduced to the basics of reading a clock. The lesson begins by examining a clock face which displays the numbers 1 through 12, representing the hours in a day. Two distinct hands are identified on the clock: the longer hand, known as the minute hand, and the shorter hand, referred to as the hour hand. Students learn that these hands move around the clock to indicate the time.

The lesson continues with a practical example, encouraging children to observe the positions of the hands on the clock. When the minute hand points to 12, it signifies the start of a new hour. At the same time, the position of the hour hand indicates which hour it is. For instance, if the hour hand is pointing at 3 while the minute hand is at 12, the time is read as 3 o'clock. This simple and interactive approach helps children to understand the concept of telling time and lays the foundation for more advanced time-reading skills.
