Max Maths, Year 1, Practice, Comparing capacities
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Max Maths' Year 1 practice session on comparing capacities, young learners are encouraged to engage in a hands-on activity using blocks to measure and compare how much different items can hold. This practical approach helps children to understand the concept of capacity in a tangible and interactive way. For instance, they are asked to estimate and record the number of blocks that can fit in the palm of their hand. This activity not only makes learning about capacity fun but also helps to develop their estimation skills and understanding of volume.
Children are then prompted to compare their own capacity with that of their friend's by counting the number of blocks their friend's hand can hold. They continue this exploration by measuring the capacity of a cup and even their teacher's hand, recording their findings for each one. The activity also includes an open-ended task where pupils can choose another item and discover its capacity using blocks. After completing these engaging exercises, students are directed to workbook pages 176 to 179, where they can continue practicing the concept of capacity with additional exercises and problems designed to reinforce their learning.
