Max Maths, Year 1, Try it, Comparing capacities
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Max Maths, Year 1, Try it' activity on comparing capacities, young learners are encouraged to develop their understanding of volume and capacity through practical examples. The exercise is designed to help children recognise differences in size and the amount that different objects can hold. Students are presented with sentences and asked to circle the correct word to complete each statement accurately.
The first part of the activity (a) involves comparing the capacity of a car and a bus in terms of the number of people they can hold. Children must decide whether the car holds "more" or "fewer" people compared to the bus, and vice versa. In part (b), they assess the level of liquid in a glass, a jar, and a bath, choosing from "empty," "half-full," or "full" to describe each one. Finally, part (c) asks the children to compare the size of a watering can to a wheelbarrow, determining which is "bigger" or "smaller." This exercise helps to build foundational skills in measurement and comparison, which are key components of the maths curriculum for Year 1 students.
