Max Maths, Year 1, Try it, Measuring length in units
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Max Maths' programme for Year 1 students, there's an engaging activity designed to help children understand the concept of measuring length using non-standard units. The 'Let's Try It' section introduces a simple and interactive way for young learners to grasp measurement by assigning a specific unit value to an object. In this task, each symbol represents one unit of measurement, and children are asked to determine the length of various vegetables by counting how many units they span.
The activity includes three different vegetables for the children to measure. First, they look at a picture of a carrot and count how many unit symbols it covers to determine its length. Next, they measure the length of a celery stalk in the same way, followed by a pea pod. This hands-on approach not only makes learning about measurement fun but also helps to develop foundational maths skills such as counting, comparing lengths, and understanding the concept of units as a measure of length.
