Max Maths, Year 1, Learn together, Grouping shapes

In the "Max Maths" curriculum for Year 1, young learners are introduced to the concept of grouping shapes through an engaging activity. In this particular lesson, children are encouraged to observe and discuss the characteristics of two distinct sets of shapes. Set 1 contains eight triangles, while Set 2 comprises seven squares. The objective is to help the children recognise and articulate the similarities and differences between the shapes within each set.

When examining Set 1, the children are prompted to notice that all the shapes are triangles, indicating they have the same shape. However, they will also observe that these triangles come in different sizes, adding a layer of complexity to the grouping task. In contrast, Set 2's squares are not only the same shape but also the same size, differing only in colour. This comparison exercise aids the students in developing their descriptive language skills and understanding of basic geometric concepts such as shape, size, and colour.
