Max Maths, Year 1, Try it, Subtraction as ‘how many more to make?’
Maths Resource Description
In the Max Maths Year 1 workbook, children are encouraged to understand subtraction in terms of finding out 'how many more to make?' This concept helps them to grasp the idea of subtraction as a means to determine what is needed to reach a certain number. In question 2, Samir starts with 9 apples and after eating 5, the exercise asks how many more apples he can eat. The subtraction 9 minus 5 equals 4, indicating that Samir can eat 4 more apples.
Similarly, question 3 presents Jade, who needs a total of 8 slices of bread but only has 2 slices. To find out how many more slices Jade needs, the children subtract 2 from 8, resulting in 6. Therefore, Jade needs 6 more slices of bread. In question 4, Han has a total of 10 footballs and has already kicked 3 into the goal. To find out how many more he can kick into the goal, children would subtract 3 from 10, leaving Han with the opportunity to kick 7 more footballs into the goal. Lastly, question 5 describes Toby who has 10 meatballs. After eating them all, the question of how many more meatballs Toby can eat is somewhat of a trick, as he can't eat any more if they are all gone. The answer would be 0, indicating that Toby cannot eat any more meatballs.
