Max Maths, Year 1, Try it, Doubling near numbers
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Try It' section of Max Maths for Year 1, young learners are introduced to the concept of doubling numbers that are close to each other. The exercises are designed to help children understand how to double a number and recognise the relationship between addition and doubling.
The first task presents children with a scenario where there are 6 eggs in each bowl. They are asked to find the total number of eggs by adding 6 to another 6, and then to express this as 'Double 6'. This helps them to see that doubling a number is the same as adding that number to itself. Similarly, the second task involves two flowers with 8 petals each, prompting the students to add 8 and 8 together and then to state 'Double 8'. The third task challenges them a bit more, as they have to add 4 and 5, which are not the same number, and then recognise that the total is one more than double 4. These exercises aim to build foundational arithmetic skills in a straightforward and engaging manner.
