Max Maths, Year 1, Try it, Estimating numbers to 30
Maths Resource Description
In the 'Max Maths, Year 1' curriculum, young learners are encouraged to develop their estimation skills with an engaging exercise focused on numbers up to 30. The 'Let's Try It' activity presents students with a visual challenge: they are shown a collection of counting blocks and asked to make an educated guess – an estimate – of how many blocks there are in total. This helps them to begin understanding the concept of approximation and to recognise quantities without relying on exact counts.
After making their initial estimate, students are then instructed to count the counting blocks one by one, which reinforces their counting skills and provides an opportunity to compare their estimate with the actual number of blocks. This comparison is a crucial step in helping them evaluate the accuracy of their estimation and understand the concept of estimation versus precise counting. Once the activity is completed, the students are directed to continue their learning journey by turning to workbook pages 95 to 96, where they can find more exercises to further practice and refine their skills in estimating numbers.
