Fraction Representations
Maths Resource Description
Fraction representations are a fundamental aspect of mathematics education, providing a visual aid to help students understand the concept of parts of a whole. KS2Gems has developed a series of fraction representation visuals, which depict fractions ranging from halves (1/2) to tenths (1/10). Each set of representations includes a number line from 0 to 1, marked with increments that correspond to the specific fraction being illustrated. For example, the diagram for halves shows a number line with two equal parts, each representing a half, while the diagram for tenths shows ten equal parts along the number line, each representing one tenth.
These visual aids are designed to help students grasp the size and proportion of different fractions. They show sequences of fractions such as thirds (1/3), quarters (1/4), fifths (1/5), sixths (1/6), sevenths (1/7), eighths (1/8), ninths (1/9), and tenths (1/10), with each fraction being represented by its respective division of the number line. The visuals also demonstrate how the number line is divided into more segments as the denominator increases, thus helping students to see that the larger the denominator, the smaller each part of the fraction is. This is an essential resource for educators to help students visualise and understand the concept of fractions in a clear and engaging way.
