Draw 2D shapes and make 3D shapes worksheet
Maths Resource Description
KS2Gems has crafted an engaging worksheet that encourages children to explore the world of geometry through hands-on activities. In Activity 1, children are paired up and seated back to back, each equipped with a whiteboard and pen. One child, the 'describer', chooses a 3D shape and provides verbal clues about its properties, such as the number of edges it has, while the other child, the 'listener', listens carefully, records the clues, and attempts to sketch the described shape. The listener relies solely on the describer's information and is not permitted to ask questions. Once the listener believes they have identified the shape, they confirm with the describer. The children then swap roles to give each child the opportunity to describe and draw. Variations of the activity are provided to add complexity, such as limiting the number of clues given or allowing the listener to ask yes-or-no questions. Another variation includes using physical models like polyhedra to construct the shape being described.
Activity 2 shifts the focus to constructing and representing 3D shapes in 2D form. Children are asked to build either a cube or a cuboid using multi-link cubes. With the help of isometric paper, they then draw the net of the shape they have created. This helps them understand the relationship between a three-dimensional object and its two-dimensional representation. In Activity 3, the task becomes more challenging. Each child is required to draw a net for a square-based pyramid on isometric paper. The ultimate challenge is to combine the nets they have drawn to create an octahedron, pushing their spatial awareness and understanding of geometric construction. The objective of these activities is to enable children to recognise, describe, and build 3-D shapes, including the skill of making nets for these shapes.
