Short and long division worksheet
Maths Resource Description
A worksheet designed by KS2Gems in 2022 provides a series of engaging activities to help Year 6 students master the formal written methods of short and long division. Activity 1 encourages interactive learning, where students require random 4-digit and 1 or 2-digit numbers, whiteboards, and pens. The task involves drawing digit cards from two separate piles and dividing the larger number by the smaller one, choosing between short or long division methods. This hands-on approach not only promotes calculation practice but also peer review, as children check each other's work for accuracy.
Activity 2 takes learning a step further by challenging students with pre-prepared calculations that may be correct or incorrect. The children must verify each calculation and, for those that are incorrect, they need to not only correct the calculation but also provide an explanation for the errors made. This activity reinforces understanding and helps develop critical thinking skills. Finally, in Activity 3, a grid and 1-9 digit cards are used to create division calculations that meet specific criteria, such as resulting in an even or odd number, falling within a certain range, and having a remainder or not. This activity not only solidifies division skills but also enhances problem-solving abilities. Both activities are aligned with the objective of dividing multi-digit numbers by a 2-digit number using formal methods and interpreting remainders in context.
