Vocabulary - Statistics
Maths Resource Description
Statistics is a branch of mathematics that deals with the collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of masses of numerical data. It is a vital field that enables us to understand and make sense of the information gathered through counts, tallies, and various forms of data. Vocabulary in statistics is rich and varied, encompassing terms such as 'tally', which refers to a simple form of counting, and 'data', which represents the quantitative or qualitative variables that are subject to analysis.
To visually represent statistical data, various types of graphs and charts are used. A 'block graph' is a simple chart that uses blocks to represent numbers, while a 'pictogram' uses pictorial symbols to illustrate data points. Data can also be organized into 'bar charts', where bars of different lengths represent different values, or 'tables', which systematically arrange data in rows and columns for clarity. More complex diagrams like 'Carroll diagrams' and 'Venn diagrams' are used to classify and group data based on certain attributes or relationships. Understanding the 'frequency' of data, which can be displayed in a 'frequency table', is key to identifying patterns such as the most or least common occurrences. Labels, titles, and axes are essential elements of graphs that provide context and scale, aiding in the interpretation and presentation of statistical findings. Whether dealing with 'discrete data' (distinct and separate values) or 'continuous data' (data that can take any value within a range), the goal of statistics is to present information in a way that answers questions such as "How many more?" or "How many fewer?" and to plot this information in a coherent and understandable manner.
