Interpreting pictograms
Maths Resource Description
A comprehensive set of eight pictograms is provided for Year 3 students to enhance their understanding of statistics, specifically focusing on interpreting pictograms. These visual representations can be utilised in various ways: they can be displayed to the class or a small group for interactive discussions, used as a basis for students to create tables or bar charts representing the data, or serve as a prompt for children to formulate their own questions regarding the information depicted.
Each pictogram in the pack covers a different topic of interest to Year 3 students, ranging from the number of pairs of blue socks owned by children (with each symbol representing one pair), to their favourite ice cream flavours, pets, fruits, modes of transport to school, TV programmes, hobbies, and computer games. Symbols in the pictograms have varying values, such as one symbol equating to a certain number of children, pairs of socks, or animals, which helps students practice scaling and counting in multiples. This engaging and interactive approach to learning about data aims to strengthen students' skills in data interpretation and representation in a fun and relatable context.
