Ratio - Ratio and Fractions - Planning
Maths Resource Description
In a Year 6 classroom, the concept of ratio and its relationship with fractions is explored through a series of engaging activities. The lesson begins with a review of key vocabulary such as 'fraction', 'numerator', 'denominator', 'ratio', 'compare', 'parts', and 'whole', with resources such as worksheets and presentations to support learning. Students are encouraged to utilise vocabulary cards and definitions available on a designated website. The class starts with a recap of prior knowledge, followed by a series of activities where students use practical examples to deepen their understanding. In the first activity, students are presented with a ratio of carrots to radishes and tasked with identifying the corresponding fraction, learning how to determine the numerator and denominator from the parts of the ratio.
Further activities include working with a three-part ratio using a bar model to identify the fraction of each colour represented. Students discuss and share their strategies, reinforcing the concept that the denominator is the sum of all parts in the ratio. The lesson also addresses common misconceptions, such as confusing the ratio 1:2 with the fraction 1/2, instead of recognising it as 1/3 and 2/3. Towards the end of the session, children engage in group work and independent activities with differentiated worksheets to challenge their fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. The plenary gives students the opportunity to reflect on their learning, discuss the skills they found challenging, and make a 'pinkie promise' to remember key aspects of the lesson.
