Perimeter, Area and Volume - Area and Perimeter - Starter
Maths Resource Description
Year 6 students are challenged with a series of mathematical tasks that blend geometry and arithmetic in their Spring Term curriculum. On Day 2 of Week 8, they engage in an activity called Fluent in Four - Revision, which is designed to test their fluency in mathematical concepts. The tasks include sorting various shapes into a Carroll diagram based on whether they are quadrilaterals or not, and further categorising them by area, specifically areas of 10 cm² and 14 cm². Additionally, students are tasked with solving arithmetic problems, such as finding missing sums that add up to 1,100 and 1,700, and performing subtraction exercises like 7,354 minus 843. These exercises not only test their calculation skills but also their understanding of place value and the properties of numbers.
Another intriguing task asks students to consider if a given description—of a shape whose faces consist of a rectangle and four triangles—can represent more than one shape, encouraging them to apply their knowledge of geometry creatively. The arithmetic challenges continue with problems such as calculating five less than 85 hundreds minus three less than 5 hundreds, which requires students to manipulate and subtract large numbers accurately. These activities are designed to enhance the students' numerical and spatial reasoning, preparing them for more complex mathematical concepts and ensuring a well-rounded understanding of both the properties of shapes and foundational arithmetic operations.
