Fractions - Find the whole - Starter
Maths Resource Description
This series of mathematics exercises is aimed at Year 6 students, focusing on fractions, conversions, and calculations involving area and volume. The initial task requires students to convert years into months and vice versa, enhancing their understanding of time measurement units. For instance, they are asked to express 2.5 years in months, and to break down 15 and 19 months into years and remaining months. Another conversion challenge involves dividing by 47 to get the quotient of 7. Students also tackle numerical problems such as calculating the sum of 85 tens and 38 ones, and completing sequences of division and multiplication within a set of given boxes.
The exercises progress to more complex problems, including finding the total number of trees in a garden divided into six equal regions, each with eight rows of 366 trees. Students must use multiplication to determine the total number of trees. Additionally, they are presented with volume comparison questions, where they must decide which shape has the greatest volume. A practical application question asks students to calculate how many kilograms of potatoes are left after a cook uses a fraction of the 48 kg he started with. The exercises are designed to not only reinforce the students' arithmetic skills but also to apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios, thereby deepening their understanding of mathematical concepts.
